Japanese engineers Saturday began bringing down piles of the Can Tho Bridge which collapsed last September to clear the site for investigating the cause of the collapse and continuing with the construction.

They used a remote control sawing system to cut through pile P15 Saturday.

This pile, which weighs thousands of tons, has developed cracks since the collapse and is likely to collapse any time.

Piles P13 and P14 will be sawed down in the next few days.
v The collapse of the bridge, which is being built by a Japanese consortium and funded by Japanese ODA, killed 54 people and injured 80 others.

A delegation of official development assistance (ODA) inspectors from Japan's House of Councilors visited Can Tho earlier this week to inspect the collapsed structure.
